 Post subject: KN variator problems...
PostPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2008 3:37 pm
just got my new variator from BSS, I went ahead and installed it on my 05 ruck and now I'm having some trouble, with the KN variator in and 6g weights, I am only able to hit 36 while hitting the rev limiter, I went ahead and installed the stock weights in the kn and can now hit 38-39, does this sound right? I was under the impression that with the new variator and 6g weights it would be faster all around, should I put my stock variator back in with the 6 g weights? What weights should I run in the KN for a 235lb rider?

Please help

Let the KN break in for another 20 miles.

Should I run the 7.5 weights until its broken in then switch back to the 6g? I also got a set of 5.5 g rollers as well

Run with the 7.5 grams for break-in, and see if your performance improves. If it doesn't try the 6.0 gram rollers.

I just got some parts today from BSS and installed a mix of 5 and 5.5's and was not impressed in the hill climbing abilities I thought I was gonna gain. I gained a little off the line and it doesn't lag as much in the 18-22mph range as it did before. However this could be due to a couple other things as well... I noticed that the weights I had in there for the last 400 miles or so are ALREADY really well worn with serious flat spots. Also I installed the drop in filter from BSS at the same time so who knows maybe I need to rejet considering that it is FREEZING out and I have an aftermarket exhaust with the high flow filter and it runs a little rough till it gets warmed up.

Well it ran fine all summer with the exhaust so all I really added was the filter and lighter weights because I figured that I could easily change the filter back out to the stock tomorrow or whenever easier than I could change the variator out. The cold really moist air really has seemed to affect it a lot so I'm not in a hurry to re jet it especially because it is hardly ever this cold for this long here.

The little triangular guides that are on the outer ramp plate face. Also, the smooth face of the variator itself is at a slightly different angle then the stocker, and the belt contacts it at a different angle on the edge.

Well I ended up just breaking down and ordering a Posh CDI, so now my question is, what is the recomended roller weight setup for an '05 ruck with KN variator and Posh CDI for a 6'2" 235lb rider? I tried searching, but I'm havin trouble finding a clear answer

Give it time - Ruck engines, at least with the stock jetting, don't like the cold IMHO. I lose a lot of power below 30*F, and it barely even runs below 10*F.
