How's the beast looking Acey?

I am really really close to pulling the trigger and making my Helix a skelly. A lot of the lower panels are kinda cracked, broken, scraped and otherwise plain old crappy. The rest of the scooter is really nice though. I need some money, and have been looking into selling the Helix, but I would kinda like to get best of both worlds. Sell all the Helix parts I dont need, make some money and keep the Helix.

The only downside is that I kinda like the front end, and the wind deflection it provides, and the trunk space. But I do have a Givi rack/box I could put on for storage, and without the dash it opens it up to any handlebar I want.

I'm thinking you could clean up a lot of the wiring by running it through the frame. Or in nice harnesses/tubes or something like that.

The seat worries me a little (and neither of your guys' pics really show a full, stock seat or with everything totally naked). Does it look too big and out of place with all the panels off? (Not like everything on the Helix is big, awkward, and out of place with all the panels on anyways)

Also, Leo (or acey), is that big hoop around the back tire (trunk support) welded to the frame? Or is that just bolted on? And what all bolt on to the hoop?

The rear hoop is totally bolt on and not welded to the frame in any way. That hoop is what the rear section and trunk mount to.

Yeah. Bolted. I actually removed it at one point. Scoot looks a lot shorter without it. My brother has it now and he'll be ratting it out. He's actually got it running and everything.

The earlier posts about it's difficult to go skelly on a Helix are correct...but it can be done in your garage if you have the patience. I am in the beginning stages of a Helix transformation to a sort of UBER-Ruckus.

Started with a 86 helix, running, but in need of everything...got it cheap off CL.
- All the fiberglass parts and mounts are gone...will be bare bones when done.
- Doing a total rebuild on the motor with OEM parts....bottom and top end.
- Will rejet the carb to match the new K&N breather and performance pipe...using an aluminum brushed 250cc ATV pipe from an Suzuki 4 stroke racing quad...had to fab the exaust manifold from scratch. Was not too bad....used exhaust pipe from local auto parts store and my welder...took about an hour.
- The bike is now stripped to the frame where I am going to cut out the center support, make a flatter fuel tank from scratch out of 24 guage plate steel to end up with a flat floor. Will have to weld 2x2 angle along the bottom of the frame to make up for the lost support. Will finish the top of the floor with 1/8" plate steel covered in industrial rubber mat or possibly rhino coating.
- Going to attempt to use a 10x5-166, 3x2 offset ATV wheel for the rear. Will have to mill the center of the hub out about 10mm all way around to properly nest. The Helix wheel lugs are centered on 170mm so a minor widening of the lug holes is needed. Will then have to fab a new swingarm for the right side. Planning to use a Duro 19x6x10 for the rear which should give it a little of a fatty look, but still be very functional. Will black out both wheels.
- Raise the seat by 5"...cut out existing seat support, fab new one with directional streetfighter looking supports in red.
- The frame will end up Honda Red.
- Will fab a rear storage box with a luggage rack above to conceal it and hang the plate and led rears off of it.
- Will fab new risers and bars...sort of a fatty drag bar look...risers black and fat square bars red.
- Move a new radiator to the front off the forks and conceal with a dual headlight rack in front of that with some decorative fab work.
- Forks to be black, shocks to have red springs to match frame.
- Tan leather saddle seat.
- Not sure on the instrument panel yet.
- Will use existing wiring harness as everything is there and working.
- Fab new battery box under the seat in black with decorative work to contrast the red frame.
- New fuel hoses to be transparent red.
- New radiator hoses will have stainless shielding in heat areas that will also add bling.
- A pair of flame chopper mirrors and front led signals top it off.
- Will use the existing hand controls as they work well, are of high quality and expensive to replace.

I'm thinking it should be done by the end of Feb as long as I stay with it on the weekends.
WHEW......getting tired thinking of what still has to be done....but its fun.
